My family has always loved to go camping and hiking.  As the children grew older, I soon realized we had not only done well by teaching them the love and appreciation of nature; but, we taught them having the approrpiate camping hiking gear was a must at all times.  The boys love to hike in the mountains, and sometimes their fearlessness frightens me.  However, I have discovered if I make sure they have the right camping gear and hiking gear, their safety is assured by 100%.
